GNS3 provides an intuitive graphical user interface to design and configure virtual networks, it runs on traditional PC hardware and may be used on multiple operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. GNS3 is an open source ( GNU GPL) software that simulates complex networks while being as close as possible from the way real networks perform, all of this without having dedicated network hardware such as routers and switches. I feel a bit lost since this is not my area of expertise and unfortnately, it's an obligatory class. IOU seems like it's only for UNIX and i need Windows and VIRL just looks like has no homepage and belongs to Cisco (like IOU).
I have researched a bit but all the software i seem to find (like IOU, VIRL), they don't look like a "real" complete software like GNS. I posed this question to my teacher and he said it's part of the investigation (great help), even though i don't blame him for his answer, i can't seem to find any remotely decent computer network simulator that it's not Packet Tracer, NetSim or GNS3. My question is "Is there an alternative to GNS3 that is free and open source? or is GNS3 pretty much the best option?". One of the points is about simulating the network using GNS3 and another point is to make a paper and discuss alternatives and what was used and the problem that i'm solving.
Hi! I'm in the middle of a school project and it's around simulating a small network of computers, using VirtualBox, JMX, GNS3 and a few more stuff.
